26 attendees came to hear the latest out of Springfield from Representative Sandra Pihos and Senator Dan Cronin. The legislators bemoaned the extreme partisanship downstate which has been stifling “across the aisle” cooperation, as exemplified by the stalled budgeting process. Mistrust seems to be rampant, and Senator Cronin stressed that both sides have issue with the current Administration.
But it hasn’t been all vinegar downstate. Some legislative highlights from the Spring session include education funding, stronger Great Lakes protection, and mercury reductions.
Representative Pihos brought information on the poverty rate in DuPage County, which has increased 2.1% since 1990. (We have a Unit Meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 8 on that subject.) She also brought information on a women’s health fair she co-sponsored with Representative Patti Bellock.
