League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn Hosts Public Meeting on Campaign Finance Reform, Government Ethics, and Redistricting – October 8, 2009

The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn invites interested members of the community to attend the League’s October Unit Meeting featuring former LWV-Illinois President Paula Lawson, a noted expert on Campaign Finance Reform, government ethics, and redistricting.

Ms. Lawson’s talk will touch upon the recent history of Illinois state government’s attempt and failure to pass self-regulating legislation that would limit campaign contributions, require state legislators to follow ethical guidelines, and what it might mean when Illinois redraws its congressional and general assembly district lines after the 2010 Census is completed next year. In addition, Ms. Lawson will tell us what she expects what next occur on this complex and fascinating subject.

Illinois is one of the only states that allows businesses and individuals to make unlimited campaign contributions to state legislators. State legislators are allowed to spend the money as they wish, as long as they tie it somehow to state politics. This combination, many people believe, creates a climate of corruption in Illinois politics. The League is interested to learn from Ms. Lawson how citizens can improve Illinois’ campaign finance system and government ethics rules so that the political system in Illinois is fairer, more transparent, and gains new respect from its constituents.

The meeting will occur at 7:30pm, Thursday, October 8, 2009, at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, email: info@lwvge.org

We look forward to seeing you there!
