LWVGE Members Holiday Party

(MEMBERS ONLY PLEASE! )

Time for our League holiday social... with a twist!! We want to support our downtown businesses that have been affected by the Streetscape project. So we are using our holiday social to give back to the businesses who have always supported us. And it is a excellent excuse to shop! Do your shopping downtown in Glen Ellyn on Thursday (any time) and bring your receipts to the Parlour at Park and Oak (499 Penn. Ave) for our holiday social from 6:30-8:30p. We will enjoy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. There will have a drawing for a 'big prize' chosen from all of those who made a purchase from any downtown business that day. The drawing will be held at 8:15pm. We hope to see you all there!

Please RSVP (affirmative only) so that we know who is coming! See RSVP button below.

(Dis)trust in Elections: Identifying Who Distrusts the Elections Process & Why

The Civic Awareness series, presented by Cantigny Park in partnership with the League of Women Voters, is a free program offered in person and online. For those attending in person, parking is also free if registered in advance — click on the button below. Zoom registration is at the same link.

This month’s topic examines the Campaign Legal Center’s recent report: (Dis) Trust in Elections – Identifying Who Distrusts the Election Process and Why. As a new election cycle dawns, CLC believes now is the time to educate, provide transparency and rebuild Americans’ confidence in our elections. With that goal in mind, CLC commissioned a study by the Ad Council Research Institute (ACRI) to determine Americans’ trust in the election process. Informed by a dual-phased, mixed-methods research study, ACRI and CLC targeted seven key states: Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia. The resulting (Dis)Trust in Elections report was released in May 2023.

Meet the Speaker: David Hiller is an experienced news media publisher, attorney, and philanthropic executive. He had a 20-year career with Tribune Company, where he started as VP & General Counsel in 1988. Mr. Hiller served in many leadership roles in that time, including President of Tribune Interactive, Publisher of the Chicago Tribune, and Publisher of the Los Angeles Times. Highly involved on the boards of various philanthropic and charitable organizations, Mr. Hiller also served as President and CEO of the McCormick Foundation from 2009 to 2020. His board involvement has included the Field Museum, Chicago History Museum, the Illinois Holocaust Museum, and Thrive Chicago.

May Civic Awareness Series How the World Perceives America: A Global Perspective

Cantigny Park and the League of Women Voters of WheatonGlen EllynCentral Kane County, Naperville, and Roselle/Bloomingdale continue their Civic Awareness Series on Thursday, May 11, at 7 pm.

Americans are disinclined to see themselves as others see them, which limits what the U.S. can accomplish in international affairs. This program will explore American “exceptionalism” and the notion that only Americans have a keen insight into global problems and solutions. Our speaker will also discuss how the hyperpartisanship in America’s political landscape affects global perceptions. Be prepared for a thought-provoking evening that challenges conventional thinking and encourages ideas without borders!

The League of Women Voters will be hosting Dr. Richard Farkas for this month’s Civic Awareness Series. He has been teaching at DePaul for over 40 years. He holds an honorary degree from Corvinus University and has lectured in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Croatia. His research compares strategies for political and economic development in post-Communist and post-conflict countries. Professor Farkas has consulted for some of the largest corporations in the U.S. and has appeared frequently on U.S. and international media.
