LWVGE supports the LWVUS Condemnation of the DOJ’s Overreach
August 19, 2025
The LWVGE stands with LWVUS and the Illinois State Board of Elections (SBOE) that the US DOJ’s request for detailed, personal voter data is an overreach of their authority.
The League of Women Voters has fought to protect the rights of all citizens to vote freely since 1920. In a letter to the Illinois State Board of Election, the Department of Justice demanded that the board provide the federal government the personal data for each voter “…including the registrant’s full name, date of birth, residential address, his or her state driver’s license number or the last four digits of the registrant’s social security number…”
In response, Celina Stewart, the CEO of the League of Women Voters US identified this action as “another attempt to undermine the security of our elections” and condemned “…the Trump Administration’s continued abuse of power in this action to inappropriately target voter data.”
